A Statement Regarding "Open Theism"
Since some of our United Brethren Conferences have issued statements regarding "Open Theism," we felt it would be proper for the pastors in Ontario to do so as well. We are especially concerned that a failure to make such a statement could be construed to indicate that we agree with the resolutions others have made.
While we do not necessarily endorse all of the theological views that may appear under the umbrella of "Open Theism," we would disagree with those who renounce "Open Theism" as heresy. To the extent that we understand this teaching, it appears to be a serious attempt to grapple with the biblical material about the nature of God. Whether or not we agree with their conclusions, we feel the main proponents of "Open Theism" are within the evangelical fold.
We would appeal to the history and core values of the United Brethren Church during this season of debate. A firm adherence to our Confession of Faith and to the primacy of Scripture, along with a generous acceptance of theological diversity, have been distinguishing marks of the United Brethren movement. Honest and open debate can be healthy. But we do fear that the direction that this debate has recently taken could do far more damage to the church and the reputation of the gospel than could the teachings of "Open Theism." Please do not let this issue divide the Church we love.
