VBS Project for 2001. Every year, money raised by children in UB Vacation
Bible Schools goes toward a need on one of our overseas fields. This year, the
project involves the Copan area in western Honduras, near the border with El Salvador.
Copan is famous for the ruins of an ancient Mayan city. This area of Honduras
is still populated by the families of Maya Indiana.
Honduras Conference is working with two pastors who want to start churches
in Copan. The pastors need to have more education and money.
Funds raised through VBS this summer will help start churches in an area where
there are currently no United Brethren churches.

Director of Youth and/or Children's Ministries. GraceNow! Ministries
is "a church for people who don't like church." We're new, we're nontraditional,
we're even a bit odd! We value creativity, joy, and, more than anything, grace.
We're very kid-friendly and want a good person to provide leadership for either
or both of these important ministries. This person would need to serve bivocationally
(which means that it's a part-time position at the moment). Would love to hire
a female or a minority, but all applicants happily considered.
Death of Roger Martin. Central Conference Superintendent Roger Martin
sent this note: "Rev. Roger Martin, pastor of First United Brethren Church
(Columbus, OH), passed away on the morning of Thursday, May 10. He had just celebrated
his 73rd birthday on April 29. He had initially been diagnosed with cancer about
a year ago. The past year has been a series of ups and downs as the Martin family
has been through multiple tests and treatments.
"Funeral arrangements are as follows:
- On Sunday (May 13), there will be a viewing at First United Brethren Church
(496 S. Wheatland Avenue, Columbus, OH) from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. with a memorial
service at 3:00 p.m.
- Following this memorial service, Roger's body will be transported to the
Weir Funeral Home (located on Second Street) in Chillicothe, OH, where another
viewing will be held from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A second funeral service will be held
at the funeral home on Monday, May 14 at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Mike Brown will be officiating."
Port Orange, Fla. Dennis Rowe, pastor of Faith UB, sent this report
on May 9: "Last week's National Day of Prayer was an awesome experience,
as more than 100 pastors and churches from across Volusia County came together
to pray and worship on Thursday night at the Daytona International Speedway. In
fact, we had to delay the service for 15 minutes to allow the people to get through
the traffic (most of it heading into the Prayer Service)! We had many different
branches of the Christian Church represented at the service, but we stood hand
in hand at the foot of the cross to confess, repent, and seek God on behalf of
our community!.
"God is doing some wonderful and mighty things in our county in bringing
the Body of Christ together to make a difference in this County. I have seen and
been a part of seeing God's Spirit work among His people in other locations. But
God surely seems to be doing something special in Volusia County. Church prejudices
are being torn down, and divisions are being healed. There is a sweet spirit of
humility and unity being birthed that is transcending the traditional racial and
economic divisions found in church."
