The United Brethren Story
The United Brethren Story is an interactive study of our story from the earliest beginning to the present day. It is held periodically throughout the year, entirely online. It is a requirement for ministerial licensing in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ and qualifies for 10 hours of continuing education. However, laypersons, especially local church leaders, are encouraged to participate, either individually or as a small group within your church (at a discounted cost). It’s valuable to have an understanding about who we are as United Brethren people.
The course will be delivered through Huntington University’s learning management platform called Moodle. Approximately one week before the course start date of September 8, each registrant should expect to receive Moodle access and log-in instructions in an email from course facilitator Dr. Anthony Blair.
Schedule
The next session begins September 8 and ends October 27, 2025. While there are no requirements to participate in weekly class sessions, participants are asked to join an introductory conversation on Monday, September 8, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm EST and a wrap-up/assessment conversation on Monday, October 27, also from 6:00 to 7:00 pm EST. The learning experience is designed to allow participants to move at one’s own pace but also have opportunities to interact with others along the way. Each segment is intended to be completed in one week, but how you work these projects into your week would be up to you. Coursework is expected to take one to two hours a week, plus reading.
Registration
The cost is $100, plus the cost of the required books. Simply fill out this online form to register, and don’t forget to order your course materials using the instructions below. (Churches that plan to participate with a small group should contact Jamie Hoffman at jamie@ub.org or 888-622-3019, ext 311, before registering.)
Churches that wish to register a small group would need to have at least one individual registered for the course (at the standard cost), thereby making the course materials and learning process available to the others. Others in the group may also register individually if they wish, and will need to pay the regular rate.
Required Reading
In addition to the registration fee, there are two books required for the course:
- Essentials of United Brethren History, Steve Dennie; a look at particular events and people in the story of our movement ($10.95 paperback or $3.99 Kindle) This book is only available at Amazon.com; you must order it on your own from Amazon.
- Trials and Triumphs, Paul R. Fetters, Ed.; a general history of the United Brethren Church ($14.95 + shipping) You can order this book from the national office by calling Stacie Betterly toll-free at 888-622-3019, ext 313.
